A new product designed to prevent snoring is providing packaging and distribution jobs for 220 people with special employment needs here.

The Abilities Center of Southern New Jersey Inc. has a work contract with the Brahms Sleep Aid, a company founded by the inventor of the product, Dr. Mark Pinter, a Marlton dentist.

The Brahms Sleep Aid became available June 2 through Internet orders. The company is working toward becoming a QVC vendor, too.

The product is an adjustable device that spreads the nostrils apart to improve oxygen flow during sleep. It does not require adhesive or latex.

The Brahms Sleep Aid underwent four years of development and field trials and is awaiting two patents.

Pinter decided to collaborate with the Abilities Center when he learned that the nonprofit finds or provides jobs for people with special employment needs.

"We heard about them from a dental supplier. I thought "Man, what a wonderful idea,' " said Pinter, 51, who resides in Lumberton.

Goals for his company, Pinter said, include making a product in the United States, and finding ways that his business may be used to improve the lives of others.

A portion of company proceeds will be donated to autism research.

Currently, companies in Pennsylvania and Connecticut are under contract to manufacture the Brahms Sleep Aid.

A product upgrade is already in the works, according to Pinter. He wants to find a way to administer nasal medications safely through the Brahms Sleep Aid, rather than through nasal sprays.

Susan S. Perron, director of the Abilities Center, is pleased with the center's new partnership with Brahms.

"We are always looking for new products and opportunities for our clients to work. The ideal work is the high-volume, long-term job," said Perron.

The Abilities Center of Southern New Jersey Inc., which began in 1963, provides employment, job-training and educational services for people with disabilities and other disadvantages.

Currently, the nonprofit organization contracts its services to 40 to 50 regular clients. About 220 people with disabilities work at the center, while 350 clients hold jobs with South Jersey businesses.
